ArtStart exists to help budding artists. But it's not for everyone and a great application takes effort. (Doesn't anything worthwhile?) So, before you apply, take this quick quiz. It'll help you find out whether you're eligible and what you can do to give your application a better chance.

1. Have you completed a creative arts course of Certificate IV level or above in the last three years?

Yes

2. Are you hoping to make your career as a:

graphic designer, filmmaker, community development worker, web designer, engineer, architect, journalist, fashion designer, documentary or fashion photographer?

Or are you hoping to be an:

arts administrator, curator, producer, sound engineer or editor?

Yes

3. Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

Having solo exhibitions, performing in stage shows, publishing my first book, working in communities to help them put on amazing shows, designing awesome jewellery, releasing an album – basically doing what I love and earning money from it!

I can see myself making a few dollars here and there from my art, but I think I'll concentrate on getting full time paid work and keep my art as a hobby for when I have some spare time.

I'm considering studying to be an accountant. I really feel that tax law is where my passion lies.

4. Whose arts practice would be funded if you got an ArtStart grant?

My own art – this is about my career development

I want to help my friend develop her career as a dancer she's amazing! She can do moves I didn't even know existed!

I'm a curator/producer/manager. I would use the money to help our some amazing artists in my community.

5. How important do you think creating networks and partnerships are?

It is CRUCIAL! I'm all about forming partnerships in my industry. You just never know who you'll meet and when you might be able to call on them later on to help you out.

It's probably important. My friends and I hang out a lot and talk about our arts practices. We try and go to arts events sometimes.

They're not that important, I can do it all myself. You can't rely on anyone else.

6. Who would you ask to write a testimonial about you and your arts practice?

I have some teachers, other artists I've worked with and people from the industry who could write a testimonial for me.

My mum, my best friend and my Nanna are itching to write testimonials for me! They know me pretty well and would say nice things.

I can't think of anyone.

7. What would you spend the ArtStart funds on?

I think I would use it for a mix of things like training, getting my portfolio together and a business mentor.

I want to get some promotional material made, mainly to promote a new project I'm working on.

I'd use the money to pay for materials and labour for my final performance piece for my drama degree. I'd totally get top marks if I could get this funding!

8. What type of artist are you?

Dancer, actor, circus performer, visual artist, hybrid or media artist, writer, jeweller, theatre director, designer, puppeteer, choreographer, composer, musician, cross artform or community artist.

I studied classical music but want to pursue a career in jazz.

I trained as a journalist but I really want to be a professional dancer I have no formal training, but I attend regular salsa classes at my local RSL.

9. Which of the following have you done in the last three years?

I completed my studies, hooley dooley I'm now a qualified artist!

I have started studying, I graduate next year. I'm going to be the next Lucy Guerin ... or Christos Tsiolkas ... or Maud Clark or Shaun Gladwell ... or Sarah Balsko ... or Wesley Enoch... sigh...

I did a few community college courses in watercolor painting, I think I'm going to make it big as a commercial artist!

10. Do you plan to get funding from other people and organisations to fund your ArtStart activities?

Yes, I successfully applied for $5,000 from my state arts funding agency which will help with my proposed ArtStart activities.

My parents are going to give me $20,000 to help me get started. I have big plans for the next 12 months.

No, I'm just going to see how far the ArtStart grant will take me in the year, and if I run out of money, I'll get a part time job to pay for things.
